DOAJ reaches new milestones:

We have just completed the transition to a new environment and launched a new platform with integrated functionality for sharing, exporting and enhanced search/browse functionality: at the article level, search results can be filtered by language and publication year? and by license and publication fee; at the journal level, you can filter by subject, by country, by license and by publication fees. These facets will be
developed further in the months to come. (Read more about our enhancements on our home page: www.doaj.org <http://www.doaj.org>.) We are also very proud to announce that the DOAJ has reached two important milestones:

1. For the first time since launch in 2003, more than 50% of the
journals are providing metadata at article level. We will continue to
work with the 2000+ publishers to increase this figure.
2. More than 1 million articles are now searchable in DOAJ which means
more than 1 million article-level metadata entriesare available for
harvesting! We expect this figure to increase significantly in the
    months to come.

We continue to work with key stakeholders to agree on and implement new, tighter criteria for the inclusion of journals in the DOAJ: critieria that will address issues of quality and openness, as well as other kinds of information about the journals.
We are very excited about these developments and we are grateful for the continued support from the community. We always need more support so we can continue to provide a better service, so please consider
contributing:

IndMED & MedIND Databases

Welcome to IndMED

The purpose of IndMED is to index selected peer reviewed medical journals published from India. It supplements international indexing services like PubMed. It covers about 100 journals indexed from 1985 onwards.
IndMED has been produced under an ICMR funded project - "National Databases of Indian Medical Journals". Another resource produced under this project is a portal of full text articles (medIND) of select Indian medical journals indexed in IndMED or PubMed.

From 1986 to 31st March 2009, National Informatics Centre (NIC) and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) had collaborated to setup ICMR-NIC Centre for Biomedical Information. The Centre, known as Indian Medlars Centre, provided information support services to medical research community. It also produced two important resources:
  • A bibliographic database - IndMED - by indexing about 100 Indian medical journals.
  • A portal - medIND - providing free full text access to 62 Indian medical journals.
For continuing the maintaining, updating and improvising these two important national resources, ICMR funded a new project (National Databases of Indian Medical Journals) in 2010.

IndMED:

Research methodology requires literature survey related to the research problem being investigated. Bibliographical databases, also known as indexing and abstracting services - are the first-line tools used by researchers for literature survey. Medical Researchers normally start with searching internal indexing services like PubMed. PubMed is a well known indexing service of Medical Journals produced by US National Library of Medicine. It comprises more than 20 million citations for biomedical literature from MEDLINE, life science journals, and online books. Although it is the best known tool for conducting literature survey for medical research, researcher often supplement their search results with similar regional and national databases. IndMED aims to supplement the literature surveys with Indian references. Moreover, it would be of immense use for researchers on diseases and medical problems more prevalent in India than in other developed countries.
IndMED started indexing journals from 1985 onwards. Journals are selected for indexing after a comprehensive review a selection committee from time to time. Selected journals are also reviewed periodically.

MedIND:

Indian medical community produce half the articles published from the third world yet only two percent of the papers get noticed by international medical community. Poorly developed Indian medical journal publishing industry is also responsible for the poor visibility of research published from Indian. Most journals are society journals. They seldom have overseas subscription agents for distributing journals. This results in very poor circulation of Indian journals overseas. However, omnipresent Internet has provided an opportunity to Indian Medical Journals to over this handicap. It has been shown time and again that better online exposure leads to appreciation and citations to articles. MedIND aims to provide online exposure to those indexed Indian medical journals willing to provide free full text access to there articles.

New Dürr Dental camera for intraoral and fluorescence images

The latest generation of the VistaCam iX intraoral camera is not only characterised by its functions; in addition, it meets all requirements pertaining to ergonomics. The camera has already won the renowned "iF product design award 2011" and is "red dot design award winner 2011". Dürr Dental has combined successful tried-and-tested components to create its new camera. The VistaCam product range epitomises efficient communication and diagnostic support. The VistaCam iX meets the highest requirements for fully digital image transmission with regard to depth of field and image quality. The circular, well-considered arrangement of the LEDs ensures optimum and homogenous illumination. Previously, the early detection of tooth decay and the visualization of plaque were realised using the VistaProof fluorescence camera.

Now, the new VistaCam iX enables both intraoral camera images and fluorescence images. The operator can quickly obtain an overview of the current state of the patient's teeth. The Dürr Dental DBSWIN software enables the accurate localisation and activity of caries on the screen. The new product version also allows video clips to be recorded, thus documenting the current situation of the patient. The VistaCam iX has a 360° all-round capture ring which enables the best possible use of the Still/Live and Save functions in all possible imaging situations. The Sensitive Control function conveniently sends confirmation signals to the handpiece. A movement sensor enables the automatic activation and deactivation of the camera. Moreover, it can be used in practically all types of surgery, even without a PC (stand-alone version). The disconnector on the handpiece means that the VistaCam iX is ideally suited for surgeries with multiple treatment stations.

Study Warns of Killer Bugs in Dentures

A new study has warned that dentures, despite its clean look, could be teeming with killer bugs like MRSA.
Researchers have advised that putting infected false teeth in a microwave oven for three minutes makes them safe. Dentures are known to get covered with thin layers of bacteria called biofilms, which can lurk until they are breathed into the lungs.
Nearly 20 million people in the U.S. wear full or partial dentures often infected with MRSA or drug-resistant staphylococcus aureus bacteria. The team of scientists from Brazil who carried out the research also suggested soaking them in a germicidal mouthwash solution of two per cent chlorhexidine gluconate for 10 minutes, the Daily Mail reported.
Either method is sufficient to disinfect dentures coated with the toughest MRSA biofilms for up to a week, according to the study led by Karen Tereza Altieri, a dentist at the Araraquara Dental School at the Universidade Estadual Paulista in Sao Paulo.
"To our knowledge, we are the first investigators to report the effectiveness of this method in killing MRSA," she said.
Leaving dentures in a glass overnight may not be enough to keep them clean, scientists say. Microwaving them for three minutes would be better, a study found. MRSA, full name Meticillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, is a bacteria resistant to some antibiotics and usually found on false teeth, scientists said.

"We do know there are links between the bacteria in the mouth and systemic effects throughout the body," San Antonio dentist, who specializes in the repair and replacement of teeth, Victoria Vickers said.

The study has been published in the Journal of the American Dental Association.
